Why do Shakespeare, Victor Hugo, George Orwell, Ayn Rand, William Golding, Joseph Conrad, Homer, Ray Bradbury?

In Shakespeare's defense, plagiarism was perfectly okay when he lived. :) But shame, shame on the others!
