What is the root word of predecessor?

From Late Latin: prdecessorem (nominative: prdecessor), around 420 AD, from Latin: pr "before" + decessor "retiring official," from decess-, past participle stem of decedere "go away," also "die" (see decease). Meaning "ancestor, forefather" is recorded from about 1400 AD.
