How do you put a revet pin back into a chain link ?

I changed the sprocket on my bmx, so I needed to shorten the chained, I extracted the correct amount of links but i dont no how to put the pin/rivet back in the link to connect it up again. Ive tryed hammering it in and using the rivet extractor but it always slips out, can anyone help me please
